Massive U.S. intervention in Afghanistan began in 1978 and continues to this day. The ongoing war in Afghanistan continues to kill thousands of Afghan civilians and cause extreme suffering due to horrendous injuries, the displacement of people from their homes and livelihoods, home invasions, sexual abuse, arbitrary arrests and torture, and the general humiliation of the Afghani people.

As this author stated for Liberation News on September 12, 2001:

“Americans watched in horror as the World Trade Center collapsed. Yet it was a horror no different from what the U.S. government has done with it's bombing of civilian populations in Iraq, Yugoslavia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Korea. The U.S. bombings of just these countries, not to mention many other U.S. acts of war, murdered millions of civilians. Terror against civilians is never justified…

“Today the clerical fascists of the Taliban rule Afghanistan. The CIA put them in power with billions of dollars in U.S. military aid. This massive U.S. intervention in Afghanistan was in opposition to the revolutionary PDPA government that came to power in 1978 on issues of promoting women’s rights and land reform. Literacy campaigns began teaching the poor and women how to read and write.

“Foreign religious fanatics and wealthy defenders of the old feudal system came together in a terrorist organization called the Mujahideen. With billions of dollars in assistance from the U.S. [starting under the Jimmy Carter presidency] these fanatical cutthroats waged a holy war that included killing women for teaching little girls how to read and write and throwing acid into the faces of women who had become liberated from the veil. The Taliban came to power as a result of this U.S. intervention.

No. It will be the people of Afghanistan who suffer death and destruction from war as the U.S. attempts to install a puppet government friendly to U.S. corporate [oil pipeline] interests.” Steven Argue, Liberation News, September 12, 2001

The Taliban was put in power by U.S. intervention. U.S. occupation today is a cause for war and continues to keep an extremely reactionary religious government in power. Afghanistan had secular governments with much wider women's rights before the U.S. began its massive intervention in Afghanistan in the 1970's. All U.S. imposed governments have been religious and anti-women. In Afghanistan, the Afghanis are better qualified to solve the problems caused by U.S. imperialism than U.S. imperialism is.

Yet rather than get out of Afghanistan Obama and McCain are proposing more troops, more helicopters, and more war.

Police Break 60 Year Old Homeless Woman's Arm

[Donna Deiss is a politically active homeless woman in Santa Cruz, who was also an advocate for tenants rights before she was unfairly evicted. The homeless in Santa Cruz, as well as activists who criticize the local government, are often victims of police harrassment, false arrests, and police violence. -Steven Argue]

60 Year Old Homeless Woman Says Police Broke Her Arm

Donna Deiss called in last night to report that yesterday around 5 PM, Officer La Moss (Badge #114) assaulted her, broke her arm, and then put her in handcuffs when he attempted to question her at Three Tree Lot near Lighthouse Field. Deiss was taken to the Watsonville hospital, had to wait hours for x-rays, whichconfirmed her arm was broken.
Deiss reported the following to me in a phone message last night and an e-mail this morning:

She was talking with friends yesterday on Westcliffe Drive near her RV. An undercover police officer, whom she later identified as Officer LaMoss, arrived in a black unmarked car and said he wanted to talk to her and others in the group. She read La Moss a statement from the ACLU about the rights of community members vis a vis the police and walked to her RV.

The cop followed her. She got in and tried to close the door. Le Moss, not saying she was under arrest or detained, reached in and grabbed her right arm, pinching the skin as he twisted it behind her back, breaking it. She screamed her arm was broken, but his response was to call for backup. 4 more police cars arrived. She continued screaming for 911 and finally paramedics showed up.

The police said they were impounding her RV, which she lives in.

She was taken to Watsonville hospital, waited hours for x-rays and painpills. She is charged with battery and an additional charge. X-rays confirm her arm was broken. She needs an attorney and community support.

This is an account from Donna Deiss (with someadditions from her friend Shane). Donna has previously been harassed by rangers as part of the 'clear out the hippies' campaign at Three Tree Lot and the other lots around Lighthouse Fields. Recently the City's Parks and Recreation Department had its 'No RVs' signs painted over by state Rangers, for apparently violating state law and policy regarding parking (i.e. RVS are allowed to park).

On This Anniversary of the Kent State Massacre

Thirty eight years ago, on May 4, 2008, at Ohio’s Kent State University, the National Guard opened fire on students protesting the US war in Vietnam. The students were shot from distances of 275 to 400 feet, giving lie to claims that the students posed a threat to the Guardsmen. Four students were murdered and nine were injured. Nobody ever did time for those murders.

Before May 4, 1970, an anti-war movement had been building in the United States. The American people were increasingly impatient with the war, and an active anti-war movement helped build that kind of consciousness. People wanted an end to the war and Nixon kept promising a “light at the end of the tunnel.” On April 30, 1970, Nixon announced the invasion of Cambodia. This was the opposite of what people wanted to hear. Protests erupted on campuses that had not had them in the past, like Kent State. For many, the cold blooded murder of students at Kent State and murders of students soon after at Jackson State, were the final straw.

Immediately after the Kent State shootings 8 million students went out on strike, and some Universities, such as Berkley, were taken over by students and faculty as anti-war universities. After May 1970, the majority of those drafted were already opposed to the war before they got to Vietnam. This brought an end to the war. The US government could not win the war because they were facing fierce battles from the Vietnamese and many US soldiers were actively resisting the war. Commanding officers were winding up dead as they tried to force soldiers to kill people in a foreign land for a war they did not believe in. Nixon could not win a war with drafted soldiers who refused to fight, and this was a factor that forced the U.S. government to withdraw from Vietnam.

Three million Vietnamese were murdered as a result of the US occupation of southern Vietnam and massive U.S. bombing of the north. Over 50,000 US soldiers died. It was resistance, both by the Vietnamese people, and the resistance of the anti-war movement in the United States that brought an end to the US occupation of Vietnam. Had the working class of the United States been ready to join that strike of 8 million students in May 1970, we would have potentially had a revolution in the United States, but at that time the working class was not ready.

Today, after the lessons of Vietnam, and after decades of bi-partisan union busting, outsourcing, privatization, and declining living standards for the US working class, the U.S. working class is now stepping out and taking the lead in the struggle against the criminal occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. On May 1st, 2008 10,000 U.S. port workers of the ILWU went out on strike against the U.S. occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, shutting down all 29 ports on the West Coast for eight hours. Within the union, Vietnam Vets were some of the strongest advocates of the strike.

Joining the strike in solidarity with the demand of immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq were the Iraqi port workers at Umm Qasr and Khor Alzubair. They joined U.S. workers in a deeply symbolic one hour strike to end the occupation.

In going out on strike, the union ranks of the ILWU defied the rulings of an arbitrator, who twice ordered them not to strike. They also defied the employers of the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) who declared the strike “illegal”. This is the kind of defiance the working class will need to emulate in other industries, both to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and to start winning better contracts.

Today, over a million Iraqis have died as a result of the U.S. invasion. In addition, the U.S. has installed a religious death squad government where women's rights have eroded, the economy has deteriorated, the environment has been seriously devastated by the radiation of US DU weapons, millions of refugees have fled the country, people are often arrested without cause and tortured, the US bombs civilians from the sky, and basic infrastructure like water and electricity have been destroyed by the US and not rebuilt by the US occupiers.

It is also a war that has cost the U.S. thousands of lives, tens of thousands of casualties, and trillions of dollars in debt. Yet, for a few extremely wealthy Americans it has meant massive profits for military contractors and other businesses with contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, multinational companies like Exxon, BP and Shell are drooling as the U.S. government tries to force an oil law down the throats of the Iraqi people that would turn ownership of Iraqi oil over to these corporations.

Meanwhile, the pro-war Democrat Party voted for the war and keeps voting to fund it. Today, the Democrats are once again pushing for $178 billion in funding for the war. Neither Clinton nor Obama would promise to withdraw all troops from Iraq by 2013 ("The Democratic Presidential Debate on MSNBC", New York Times 9/26/07). In addition, the two of them have offered differing versions of expanding these wars into Iran and Pakistan.

Whoever wins the upcoming election, it will take increased action by the working class to end these wars. ILWU member Jack Heyman is correct in saying of the May 1st strike against the war, “There's precedent for this action. In the '50s, French dockworkers refused to load war materiel on ships headed for Indochina, and helped to bring that colonial war to an end.” The longshore workers’ May 1st strike does indeed show the way forward. More strikes, and bigger strikes, along with building a workers’ party independent of the Democrats and Republicans, can indeed end these wars.

Their continued rule of America will assure a future of more imperialist war, a healthcare system that doesn't work, and no meaningful action on global warming (the single biggest threat to the future of humanity and a healthy planet).

The Cool Earth Party is being established on the principles of revolutionary democratic socialism. We call for an end to the dictatorial power of the wealthy through the nationalization of major industries and for the establishment of a planned economy run to meet human and environmental needs. This socialist society must be established within the framework of full democratic freedoms and multi-party proportional democracy. To be truly Democratic all parties running in elections will be legally guaranteed equal time in the media, big campaign spending will be outlawed, and electronic voting machines (which are presently used to rig American elections) will be eliminated.

Upon taking power the Cool Earth Party will establish a system of socialized medicine for the United States, end all U.S. military occupations of other countries, end U.S. military aid to repressive governments, and nationalize the auto and energy industries to carry out immediate emergency measures to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Throughout the ages humanity has sought out the prophecies of the spiritually gifted to instil a clear hope and vision into life. During this time many prophecies come to us trying to lead us in many different directions.
Some prophecy points to disaster, hopelessness and the annihilation of mankind. But other prophecies create a vision of joyful transformation through quantum leaps into love and light.
As things stand now, the human race is dreaming a hell.
But as individuals and as a collective humanity it is our potential to dream of paradise and to create the kingdom of heaven on our Mother Earth.
Could it be that the pain in our hearts caused by the hell we have created will spur us on into visions and creations of a world formed in love?
It is my prayer and dream, along with a multitude of others who have taught me to dream the Rainbow dream, that each and every one of you learn to dream both while awake and sleeping, the dream of unity and love through divine transformation.
This prophecy is a dream and vision that is a potential reality for mankind. It is not an ultimatum. But it is ours to behold and to create if we only dare to dream it together.

PART ONE ~
The distribution and giving back to humanity of the Twenty Count.
In the Turtle Island lore we say it is the time of finding one’s path with heart.
The time of seeking perfection, growth and development.
Most importantly the time of trust and innocence, when mythologies of the world are revealing secrets.

PART TWO ~
The critical time. The time of the animal. The time of Tuwalananie, the dark force.
The reason for this is that seeds of light have been planted and we are starting to grow and the teachings are starting to come out and all those ones who have taught partial truths, who have taught deliberate lies in history, are going to be threatened by the awakening of the Rainbow people because the Rainbow people exist in every country, in every nation, in every land.
The Dark Forces will be threatened and they will use their power and their power exists in technology. We are going to see new technology appearing which will be a tremendous threat to the survival of humanity.
We must exert our influence by gathering together and sharing our ideas and plans for alternative power and for world peace. If we put a double amount of energy with what we are for, we can change it. We can change it.

PART THREE ~
The time of human to human communication.
The time the human family finally starts to become human.
There will be more information brought out into open format than has ever been seen on this planet.
We will re-establish contact in a very knowledgeable way with our ancestors from the stars.
So mark that down because it will happen. The first contact will be with the Pleiades and will be totally acknowledged and will be known to all the world powers. The second contact will be with Sirius.

PART FOUR ~
When truth seekers begin to open the veil of the crack between the worlds, we will see our memory circles.
Many of the leaders who are trying to keep us locked in the past, will not function today, will fall.
Many teachers and wise people will be seen for who they are and they will be the farmers, the labourers and the gas station attendants because the tagashala will be fully awakened.
People will begin to link up with other people in gathering together circles.
Many of these will be the so-called 'common people' and not the teachers you see up there now.

PART FIVE ~
The various winged serpent wheels will begin to turn, to dance once again and when they do the rainbow lights will be seen in dreams all over the world and these rainbow light dreams will help awaken the rest of humanity.
We will sit in a new circle of law.
All civil and social laws will have to be in conformity with natural laws or the people will not accept them and they will have the enlightenment necessary to reject those laws.
Science will once again become metaphysics. They will discover four laws that will help them jump to universal law and transcend the time-space continuum which is the limitation of the age and once again we will begin to take our power and to work with rules and laws that are cosmic laws.

PART SIX ~
We will once again see the way to continue a new dream.
We will be given the road map back to the stars and we will see the star people come out of the illusion of their two-legged form and into their actual great sleeper-dreamer form.
A powerful time approaches humanity and its really hard for me to talk about it.
I am a great dreamer but I don’t know if I dream that large.
We will see a real shift in planetary consciousness.
Many of the enemies of the humans will begin to drop away.
We will totally gain the light of the great light wheel.
There will be one humanity, one planet composed of all the different ways of dancing in complete harmony in the great gathering together circle.
All the seeds will be planted.
The Earth will have its true reality formed.
It will join the sisterhood of planets, the daughters of Copperwoman and it will create within itself all forms of all things in harmony with the everything.
We will see a whole new way of perfection.
There will be plants on this grandmother earth that will give life and sustenance as never before seen.
Starvation on the earth, all those things will be gone. There will be total balance and harmony.

PART SEVEN ~
The new race of humans will begin to design their new reality of life on this planet as they intended it to be when they first came here from the stars.
We will begin to establish this planet and use the collective consciousness to hold the power of this space in harmony with the Great Circle of Twelve and all the planets. There is a whole lot I don’t even know. There is more that I am not supposed to talk about yet.
The dream will be actualised and this planet will hold its space in the great council of planets and become a part of the universal enlightened sisterhood and brotherhood of humanity and keepers of the light circles. It's happened on many planets and it's expected to happen on a lot of other planets.
There will be a moment when the population will be 'the' Population, and something great will happen.
This planet will have its design of energy movement guided by all of humanity living here.

The Great Spirit will leave its seed and the egg of everything here on this planet and it will create itself 20 times over at the speed of light and this prophecy ends as I have been given it by the Grandmothers that I share with you now.

~ VISION of FREEDOM ~

I hope many people will send the Vision of Freedom to friends.

I have been involved with the Rainbow Dream Vision of Hope and Freedom since 1984. In that year, three musicians came into my one-man printing and publishing office, and said, "You really must look at this." They seemed a little (funny how life is at times) like the three wise people bringing gifts. Two days later I was distributing copies at a conference, and like me, people were amazed and astonished.

That's when my life started to be 'larger than life'.
And, in 1987, I went to visit the Hopi in Arizona, North America.

As I drove in from the west, an older man sitting by the roadside waved down my car... later, it felt to me that I was expected. He took me to meet Qwa David Monongye, and in the evening I was taken to a ceremony in the kiva. A dozen or more men descended from a ladder in the roof, and formed up in an arc of a circle.

They faced one direction, towards one of the ends of the arc, and started a slow foot-shuffling dance. Then fairly suddenly, domino-effect, turned one-by-one 180 degrees to face the other end of the arc. At that point I very nearly fell off my chair ... something had hit me. A year or more later, thinking about it, the realisation seemed to be: 'We can change the direction the world is going in. It is possible.'

I drove off, eastwards, along the Hopi mesas to find somewhere to park up, and sleep the night. In the morning I got out of the car, and was surprised to see the face of the large rock only feet from the car had a carving on it. This was the Hopi's 'Prophecy Stone', and it shows people moving in a direction, and the path splitting into two. One path goes nowhere, it fades out. But the other path goes on, and corn symbols by the path indicate that this route leads to life and prosperity.

Many other unusual and significant things occurred out there in this ancient place where it feels like time had stopped. Indeed, after visiting the oldest township on the Hopi mesas ~ a tall, sharp-ended mesa, rather like a ship of the desert ~ my watch stopped, and never worked again. There is much more that happened.

In 1986 ~ the year before my first visit to the Hopi ~ I was within sixty feet of three disc craft, for around 25 minutes. This too, was like events were coming together to inform me of something significant, something much bigger than myself. In 1993, with friends, we were very close to craft in the area of the crop patterns of mid southern England on several occasions.

Since 1993, on most days when I first step out of doors I frequently see one or more flashes in the sky, seemingly from a source fairly close, and at a lowish elevation. I have always taken the flashes to indicate the locations of disc craft which are 'parked up' and are stationary. In 2007, possibly because I was loaned a camera with an unusual infra-red setting, many craft and aerial objects started to appear in my general scenic photographs. (A) The Rainbow Dream Vision says: "We can change it (the direction the world is going). If we put a DOUBLE amount of effort into what we are for."

(B) The Hopi Nation has a prophecy stone which predicts the world will come to a time of choice. And if we choose the good direction, we can go on into a good life.

(C) The craft appearing all over the world, seem to be waiting and watching. To see if we can figure things out. To see if we can: 'Seize The Day'.

The writing is on the wall, and it says: 'We can change direction.'

Don't feel disheartened. It looks like there are some unexpected, good moves to happen yet: "There is a whole lot I don’t even know. There is more that I am not supposed to talk about yet."

It is very important that as many people as possible, in different places, should take part in the Gathering. Decide where and when and how to gather. Your participation is needed.

This is the beginning of the break we are all waiting for; for you all on Earth and ourselves out here. This is the beginning of the turn around. We have waited so long for the change. It is time. This is the beginning of the end of the old ways; the turning of the tide.

The young of all nations are looking for a new direction. It is time to light a beacon to show the way for all humanity. Let your feelings, thoughts and beliefs be your guiding light. The power of the moment. The wishes of the people. The good times ahead.

With the teeth of the Pakistani dictatorship now bared, we are beginning to see a mirror image of most of U.S. history throughout the last century.

Although perhaps best seen in the vicious wars of Latin America, it is a fact that the U.S. government supported brutal, violent dictatorships on every continent, almost always against popular, and especially workers movements.

Although most Americans would be hard pressed to actually recall the names of 4 U.S. backed dictators of the 20th century, it is a safe bet that the people who tried to survive in those countries will remember them for the rest of their lives.

From Haiti's infamous Duvaliers, to Cuba's Batista, there were no dictators too wretched, too violent, too vicious for the U.S. to support.

There's a good reason why when President Lyndon B. Johnson took the Oval Office after John Kennedy's assassination, he told one of his aides, "We've been running a damned branch of Murder, Inc. in the Caribbean."*

That's because Washington was essentially internationalizing its program of repression and McCarthyism, according to at least one Latin American country. Scholar (and former diplomat) Clara Nieto wrote, in her remarkable 2003 work, Masters of War, the story of how the U.S. got almost the entire continent to go its way:

At the Tenth Inter-American Conference requested by {former State Dept. chief John} Dulles and held in Caracas in 1954, he easily persuaded the meeting to adopt a declaration condemning international communism and advocating hemispheric solidarity and mutual defense against "Communist aggression." The chancellor of Guatemala, Guillermo Toriella, warned that on "the pretext of combating Communism, fundamental principles of democracy can be contravened, violations of human rights justified, and the principle of non-intervention infringed upon." The declaration, he argued was "the internationalization of McCarthyism." The majority - all dictatorships - supported it; Argentina (under Peron) voted against it and Mexico abstained. Costa Rica did not attend the meeting, since Jose Figueres refused to participate in this "assembly of dictators in a country governed by the most brutal and corrupt of them all, General Perez Jimenez" {C. Nieto, pp.138-139}.

Thus, generations were subjected to the terrorism of their own governments, their own armies, paid, and trained by the Americans. These U.S. trained terrorists launched wars against their own people; students, teachers, trade unionists, writers, intellectuals, priests, Indians, and beyond.

Yet, that was then. What now?

Despite all the gas and rap about "freedom", "democracy", and the like, the U.S. is, once again, depending on a dictator who has essentially shut down the Supreme Court, whipped lawyers in the streets, waged fraudulent elections, exiled his political opponents, and ruled with an iron fist. The differences between Burma and Pakistan could be measured in inches.

Yet, none of this really matters to the White House. What matters is what has always mattered. That the dictator do the bidding of his imperial masters - the people be damned.

There's a reason why Latin America has elected predominantly anti American governments in the past decade, and it had nothing to do with the easy media fiction that Hugo Chavez made them do it. For millions of people, they remember the so called 'secret wars' waged by armed puppets of the Americans-and they want no more of it.

Dictatorship 2 -- Democracy 0.

Illegal Echo / untitled echo finds its origin in an excavation of memory, personal and public, and how in this terrain we can find irrepressible connections in the present world of both movement and images. Integrating dance-theater with photojournalism, the work navigates the intersecting landscapes of peripheral identity, transience and the instability of both body and social standing. To dance a falling line of recall. The distances between myth, allusion, and concrete subject, the missing/searching, outsider/insider, and the internal markers to what is one’s said society or place of origin are dually explored through the medium of dance and visual theatre.

The work contains a diverse landscape of sound from the classical to the urban, from noise to silence, featuring vocalist/indy-musician Odessa Chen and classically trained pianist/new music advocate Kanoko Nishi combined with an assemblage of street/field recordings. It will also feature an image to image dialogue with veteran photojournalist Robert L. Terrell.

In part, this new work has been made from the research, distillation, and trace of a two month movement workshop and impromptu writing engaged with local homeless and formerly homeless individuals here in the SF Bay Area. An extension of this work will be exhibited in the lobby gallery space.

Inspired by the charismatic Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune (1920-1997), To Mifune tells the story of a cowgirl’s (Christy Funsch) journey to meet her samurai idol (Skorpio). The characters for this work are drawn from Mifune’s roles, as well as from roles in acclaimed Japanese film-maker Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, Stray Dog, and The Seven Samurai. Funsch’s work examines how one’s individuality shifts through interactions with others: movement is borrowed, shared, exchanged, and exaggerated among all of the characters. The protagonist’s idea of who she is changes as her context changes, and by the time she meets the person she thought was her idol, she has come to appreciate the perhaps less grand---though certainly not less admirable---heroics of those she has met on her journey.

Hip-hop DJ K808 mixes live original beats with samples from both Kurosawa’s film Yojimbo and country singer Patsy Montana into a living sound score for the work. The result combines multiple voices with a hip-hop sensibility, which Funsch defines as “an assertion of individuality”. Funsch’s idiosyncratic collection of performers for To Mifune exemplifies her fascination with style as a way of linking the personal with the collective. According to Funsch, “When we create a little truth for ourselves, a way we want to be seen, we are usually seeking empathy. The commonality of this impulse connects us, regardless of the diversity of our movement choices.”

Fight Homophobia at the Catalyst!!!

Dear friends,

Three weeks ago today, I was there when one of the members of our community was assaulted while being called “faggot” on King Street. He sustained a concussion and fractures in a several places in his face. I never thought it could happen in Santa Cruz, but since that date I’ve heard stories from four other people of similar incidents. Hate speech results in hate violence and now the Catalyst is bringing one of the most virulently homophobic singers in the world to our community tomorrow (Sunday the 11th) and I plan to speak out against it.

I will be joined by members of the GLBT alliance and our community who believe that the Catalyst bears responsibility for their decision to invite, profit from and give venue to a group who openly calls for the killing of gays and lesbians. Sizzla is by far one of the worst of the worst, bragging about having killed gay men and inciting others to do the same at a concert in Chicago. He has repeatedly refused to apologize for his actions and has said that it is gay and lesbian people who should apologize.

While I certainly believe in free speech, I believe there is a difference between free speech and hate speech. There is a difference between defending a person’s rite to free speech and profiting from their virulent homophobia. If they called for the murder of women, African Americans, Jews, latinos, or any other minority, there wouldn’t even be a question of whether they should be invited into our community. As a gay man, I’d like to think that this should be no different.

I ask all of you to join me and other members of our community to speak out and let everyone know that these are not our values and that the Catalyst should be held accountable for profiting from hatred.

Sizzla has gone well beyond denouncing homosexuality; they have openly and repeatedly advocated the killing of gay men. At a reggae concert in Chicago, Sizzla bragged that he kills queers and incited the audience to murder gays and lesbians. Sizzla’s recent British tour was cancelled because the British government refused to allow him into the country; a reggae festival in France at which Sizzla was set to perform was cancelled because of the singer's virulent homophobia; a major reggae festival in Jamaica this summer was fined a reputed $20 million by its sponsor because of Sizzla's homophobic performance -- and now he's coming to Santa Cruz. Sizzla has repeatedly refused to apologize for his virulent homophobia and has said that it’s the gay and lesbian people who should apologize.

What Is the Plan for March 18 in San Francisco?

The plan: Assemble 11 a.m. at Civic Center in San Francisco, at Polk and Grove Sts. (at Civic Center BART station). Rally, and then march past key targets linking the war at home to the war abroad, returning to Civic Center for a closing rally with speakers, entertainment and cultural performances.

Volunteers are needed for the March 18 Mass March to Stop the War! End Colonial Occupation from Iraq to Palestine to Haiti… US Out of the Middle East! Fund People’s Needs Not the War Machine!

Civic Center Plaza (Opening Rally Site):
8:00 to 9:30 Truck unloading and set up
9:00 Volunteer sign in (including Legal Observers & Security) for check-in please go to the table under the Volunteer banner
9:00 Check-in for informational table set up and directions
11:00 Gathering rally at Civic Center
Approximately 12:30 march stepping off
2:00 p.m. March arrives back at Civic Center

There are many ways you can help out regardless of when you are arriving - and volunteering doesn't mean you have to miss the rally or the march! Please see below for a list of various areas in which help is needed. You will be contacted with more information about the area for which you signed up prior to the march. When you arrive at the rally, look for the signs that say "Volunteer" (unless asked to report elsewhere).

Worksessions are taking place daily and outreach materials are available to be picked up at all times to continue to spread the word. Call the 415-821-6545 to begin getting involved.

Worksessions: There will be worksessions at the A.N.S.W.E.R. office on Tuesday 3/14 at 7 pm and on Wednesday 3/16 at 6 pm — and you can also help out during the day (just give us a call for details). At our Tuesday ANSWER Activist Meeting at 7pm, we will have a Volunteer Orientation and go over the scenario of the day for March 18 and then break into worksessions.

On Friday, March 17, we will be loading the truck with all the materials for the march at our office at 5pm.

On Saturday, help is needed from 8 am until 5 pm. There are many different areas that need help — including sign and literature distribution, legal observers, First Aid, march monitoring & more! Please see the descriptions and sign up sheet below.

Sign distribution: We will be handing out hundreds of signs so that those who see our march on the streets of SF and in images in the media know exactly what we're there for! We have beautiful signs with many different slogans to give out. This job will begin about 10 am and continue until more people have arrived at about 12 noon. When you arrive at Civic Center look for the banner that says "Volunteer" — people at that table will direct you to the sign distribution points.

Literature distribution and outreach: There will be flyers and other materials to let people know what's coming up next, and to provide organizers and activists from around the area with resources that can contribute to local organizing. We will have tables to staff, and go into the crowd to hand out materials. We will also be circulating the "Fund People's Needs Not the War Machine" petition and asking people to sign the mailing list. These jobs can be done regardless of when you are arriving or how much time you have. When you arrive at Civic Center, look for the banners that say "Volunteer".

Legal Observers: We need legal observers for the march and rally. If you have any legal background, please email us if you can help in this area and our coordinator from the NLG will contact you.

March Monitoring: We need volunteers to help keep the march going to and direct people at corners where the march is turning. Volunteers will be working in conjunction with our security team.

First Aid: We are looking for people who have training in first aid (EMT, RN, LPN, M.D., first aid instructor). If you are volunteering for this area, please describe your first aid training in the comments section. You should report to the First Aid tent by the stage as soon as you arrive at the demonstration. The First Aid coordinator will get in touch with you in advance to schedule you for a shift during the rally and/or march. You can also check in at the First Aid Tent by the stage at Civic Center.

Help is also needed for set up at 8am Saturday morning and take down at 4pm after the rally. If you are unsure about what you want to do or when you're available, you can come to the Volunteer Tent at anytime on Saturday to sign up to help. Please fill out the form below and reply to this email.

TABLING POLICY
There is a designated area for groups to set up tables at the Civic Center, and there will be a $50 fee for nonprofits to help offset the enormous organizing costs and $250 for commercial sales.
Table space at the Civic Center in the designated area is available for 6-foot tables on a first come, first served basis. The fee must be paid at the time when you set up your table and you must bring your own table.
Ask for the Tabling Coordinators after 9:00 am at Civic Center for set-up area details. There will be volunteers on hand to explain and to collect the fee. Please bring cash, check or money order (made to "A.N.S.W.E.R.") with you when you set up.

Hemp Farming Bill Passes California Assembly
Vote Hemp Applauds Assembly Leadership on AB 1147
Looks to Senate for Passage

SACRAMENTO, CA — California business leaders and farmers are celebrating today's passage of AB 1147, which clarifies that the cultivation of industrial hemp is legal on the condition it contains no more than three tenths of one percent ( 0.3%) tetrahydro-cannabinol (THC). AB 1147 passed with a clear majority of 44 votes in favor and 32 against, and the bill now goes to the Senate for consideration. Final passage of AB 1147 could revitalize commercial industrial hemp farming, which occurred in the state up until shortly after World War II.

AB 1147 was introduced last February by Democratic Assemblyman Mark Leno and in recent months was amended and jointly authored by Republican Assemblyman Chuck Devore. "Industrial hemp is a bipartisan agricultural issue whose time has come," says David Bronner, President of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps of Escondido which imports hemp seed and oil from Canada and Europe for their soaps and snack bars. "We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars importing industrial hemp, so we think it is time to give California farmers a chance to grow it for us," adds Bronner who is also a board member of Vote Hemp.

From natural soaps to healthy foods, a variety of "Made in California" hemp products could benefit from an in-state source of hemp seed, fiber and oil. According to the Hemp Industries Association (HIA) there are over 50 member businesses that make or sell hemp products in California. Currently these businesses must import millions of dollars of industrial hemp from countries such as Canada, China and England. "We are very pleased that this bill passed the Assembly and congratulate Mark Leno and Chuck DeVore whose leadership was essential in passing this bill," says HIA President Steve Levine.

Additional credit for passage of AB 1147 goes to the Organic Consumers Association, the Rainforest Action Network and the California Certified Organic Farmers, who mobilized their members to support AB 1147.

If AB 1147 now passes the Senate and is signed by the governor, California will join the six other states that currently have laws removing barriers to industrial hemp production or research (including Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, North Dakota and West Virginia). To date, twenty-six state legislatures have considered industrial hemp legislation and fourteen have passed laws or resolutions, including the California Assembly which in 1999 passed a resolution declaring that "the Legislature should consider action to revise the legal status of industrial hemp to allow for its growth in California as an agricultural and industrial crop."

AB 1147 would not conflict with or be pre-empted by federal law, nor would it interfere with the enforcement of marijuana laws. It would only allow farmers to produce the parts of the plant that are already legal to import under state and federal law: industrial hemp seed (and oil), fiber and woody core (hurds).

Bio:

Respected and emulated New York-based producer, DJ, and label chief Osunlade grew up in a musical environment; as a youngster, he took piano lessons and sang in his church's choir. At the age of 17, he joined the cast of the popular children's show Sesame Street as a presenter. He later produced music for the program. During the late ‘80s, he started working as a producer and session hand; since starting out, he has leant his talents to records by Musiq, Patti LaBelle, Najee, India Arie and Eric Benet. In 1999, Osunlade established the Yoruba label and began releasing deep house productions of his own while cultivating new artists. For his first album, 2001's Paradigm, the producer hooked up with the U.K.'s Soul Jazz label, which released the excellent LP and increased his profile significantly as a result. Easily one of the most gifted producers of soul/funk-influenced deep house, Osunlade – an ordained priest in the African religion of Ifa – graces everything he touches with spiritual, uplifting vibes. Offering, a mix album released by R2, came out in 2002.

This is the first new release by Great Britain's Soul Jazz label — widely known for its dynamite reissues of everything from killer Nuyorican soul to New Orleans funk to funky and militant jazz — in years. This debut album by a New York-based house artist comes as a surprise. But it's a welcome one. Osunlade drenches his house in Brazilian, funk, and Latin colors, blending it all into a thoroughly modern dancefloor music that is as compelling to the ears as it is motivating to the booty. The singles from the set include "Blackman," a poetic move toward jazzy house with sampled chords from Bobby Konders' "The Poem." It's a late-night groove, laid-back but insistent, with a rap about Osunlade's upbringing and his spiritual beliefs. It's a kind of housed-out manifesto of positive Afrocentrism. Also notable is the traditional Brazilian tune "Oxissi de Focha Branca," with its drum chants and a call and response rhythm that retains its field recording primitivism long after the house beats kick in. The set closes with "The Deep," a driving house rhythm set against a rolling, one-note bassline interspersed with a two-chord, three-sequence vamp kissed by a harmonica sample in the groove. The harmonica is the lead "melodic" instrument (it's a Charlie Musselwhite sample), though it's just riffing in the cut and carrying the track through its intervals. This is an auspicious debut by a young cat who has brought something new and very different to the world from the house scene in New York.

to all returning from burning man

I hope everybody is well and had a great time, I kinda wish I was there with you. I mean to inform you and not to admonish you for having been gone during this time . Over the past week our government has systematicly killed thousands of Americans. They did this by ignoring the enormity of Katrina and not giving it the attention it needed. People in New Orleans and other places were stranded for days before the appearance of any "authorities".When they finally showed they seemed more interested in "security" than relief. I watched FOX Newscasters break down in tears pleading for assistance . They were seeing babies die of dehydration in their mothers arms,dead people pushed in corners,piles of human waste in these so called shelters. They were told to go there and no food or water(or bathrooms)were provided for days. There were 30,000 people in the supedome in these conditions..Not to mention the Convention center which recieved even less assistance .They were on the most republican news station on the tube and they were very critical of the effort. We can only hope that the public's eyes will be opened to the complete disregard this administration has for it's citizens...I can't help but wonder how the response would have been if it had happend in a rich white area like Malibu... I wonder if they would have left them standing on their roof for 5 days with no food water shelter or security...whew...Keep yours eyes open , read news in the internet or wherever ...Don't let this pass you by . this is criminal ...We need everybody in the streets on sept 24th!!!

Keep your eye on the $ with Relief Aid

I know alot of RisistDancers will be doing what they can to help with what is turning out to be a tragic event of historic porportions in New Orleans. Now as I've watched many 'progressives' hand over wades of hard earned rare community money to the Red Cross for years now I have to share some information with those with the ears to hear, the Red Cross isn't the friendly, helpful institution it fronts as. Please read the following brief summery and do your homework before you write a check or send the 'door' to someone to help the American needing help right now. And why isn't Bush helping Americans at least as well as we've helped other nations during disasters, another thread alltogether, but we've gotta get rid of the Shrub too!

Don't Give Your Hurricane Donations to the Red Cross
Establishment charities have history of withholding disaster funds

As the aftermath of hurricane Katrina continues to wreak mayhem and havoc amid reports of mass looting, shooting at rescue helicopters, rapes and murders, establishment media organs are promoting the Red Cross as a worthy organization to give donations to.

The biggest website in the world, Yahoo.com, displays a Red Cross donation link prominently on its front page.

Every time there is a major catastrophe the Red Cross and similar organizations like United Way are given all the media attention while other charities are left in the shadows. This is not to say that the vast majority of Red Cross workers are not decent people who simply want to help those in need.

But what the media fails consistently to remember in their promotion of the organization is that the Red Cross have been caught time and time again withholding money in the wake of horrible disasters that require immediate release of funds.

The Red Cross, under the Liberty Fund, collected $564 million in donations after 9/11. Months after the event, the Red Cross had distributed only $154 million. The Red Cross' explanation for keeping the majority of the money was that it would be used to help 'fight the war on terror'. To the victims, this meant that the money was going towards bombing broken backed third world countries like Afghanistan and setting up surveillance cameras and expanding the police state in US cities, and not towards helping them rebuild their lives.

Then Red Cross President Dr. Bernadine Healy arrogantly responded when questioned about the withholding of funds by stating, "The Liberty Fund is a war fund. It has evolved into a war fund."

Despite the family members of victims of 9/11 complaining bitterly to a House Energy and Commerce Committee's oversight panel, the issue seemed to be brushed under the carpet and the mud didn't stick.

The Red Cross' scandalous activities reach back far before 9/11.

After the devastating San Francisco earthquake in 1989, the Red Cross passed on only $10 million of the $50 million that had been raised, and banked the rest.

Similar donations after the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 and the Red River flooding in 1997 were also greedily withheld.

Smaller charities that were involved with the 2004 Tsunami relief project went public to say that large charities like Red Cross and United Way were engaged in secret backroom negotiations with each other that meant a large portion of the donation money was purposefully restricted from reaching the most needy areas affected by the disaster.

The history is clear, the Red Cross and other large so-called charities are in actual fact front group collection agencies for the military industrial complex.

Many informed historians have even alleged that the Red Cross was used as a Skull and Bones cover to overthrow The Russian Czar and pave the way for the rise of the Bolsheviks.

Do not give any money to the Red Cross unless you support the expansion of empire abroad and police state at home. Find a smaller trustworthy organization in the local area of New Orleans and make your donation to them.

12-Hour Party People

Utah County enforced its permit, even if time was on the side of dance party promoters

Trudy Childs recalls rubbing her wrists and wincing in agony. No stranger to pain, the 52-year-old rheumatoid arthritis sufferer could barely tolerate the zip tags Utah County Sheriff’s deputies used to keep her in line. An unsympathetic officer congratulated Childs on an “Emmy-winning performance,” laughing as his colleaguesclose to 90 law-enforcement officials, including Provo City police and a Utah Department of Corrections SWAT squadcleared out hundreds of people attending Versus II, an electronic music event hosted on her private property Aug. 20. “I don’t know why you think this is so damn funny,” Childs told the officer, frustrated by his mocking grin.

Meanwhile, officers dressed in camouflage and helmets ushered revelers off Childs’ property. Armed with semiautomatic rifles, attack dogs and, allegedly, tear gas, few people questioned their authority. The next day, online forums and various blogs decried the “illegal rave” bust as a blatant violation of basic civil rights.

Authorities said that the all-night dance party attracted drug use, theft, sexual assault and underage drinking. They later said Versus II promoters didn’t have the proper permits to host a mass gathering of more than 250 people, “reasonably expected to exceed 12 hours.”

The permit in question now fuels pending legal action against Utah County. Brian M. Barnard, attorney for Childs and the concert promoters, High Point Productions and Uprok Records, said he’ll file a civil-rights suit in federal court. While Barnard has not yet filed a formal complaint, he’s confident the law is on his client’s side. Brandon Fullmer, manager of Uprok and part-promoter of Versus II, knew of the county ordinance but believed he didn’t need one since his party wouldn’t exceed 12 hours.

“I don’t think there’s any question that the sheriff misapplied the ordinance and acted improperly,” Barnard said, adding that the raid was discriminatory and an act of censorship. “If individuals break the law, punish them. But don’t assume that everyone who goes to a rap, hip-hop, or electronic music concert is a criminal.” The Sheriff’s Office did not return phone calls.

Utah County’s mass-gathering permit, and others like it, has roots dating back to perhaps the most famous mass gathering of all: Woodstock. Back then, officials nationwide wanted to prevent similar events in their own back yards. They feared a generation whose music and politics scoffed at authority.

“Fast forward to 2005 and things haven’t changed,” Barnard said. The irony becomes greater considering that the dancing-equals-eternal-damnation film, Footloose, was shot in Utah.

It’s not as if promoters wanted to rebel. In fact, they did all they could to comply with the law. Fullmer started planning the concert in April. He had thrown previous events as manager for a now-defunct record shop and didn’t foresee any trouble acquiring the necessary permits.

Fullmer, who scheduled the event for a 9.5-hour period, from 9 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., secured a permit through the Utah County Health Department (UCHD). He took out a $1 million insurance policy, hired security guards, rented portable toilets, obtained a solid-waste permit and met a number of other requirements before booking out-of-state and local DJs. Fullmer selected the Childs’ property as venue of choice for its sloping hills and scenic, redrock backdrop. He knew the family had a somewhat antagonistic relationship with Utah County law enforcementYancy and Rory Childs started throwing concerts in 2003, angering police with their rock and reggae noisebut figured since he’d met all the health permit’s requirements, there was no cause for concern. “I knew everything was good to go,” he said.

So did Trudy’s son, Rory Childs. The 23-year-old returned missionary, who planned to throw an Aug. 13 concert honoring a recently deceased friend, was determined to avoid a repeat of July 16, when local law-enforcement officials instigated a raid similar to the Aug. 20 bust, breaking upbut not arresting and/or ticketinga large, heavy-metal audience. He researched all requirements, obtained a fire-safety permit, picked up a copy of the lengthy public-assemblies ordinance and says he showed it to UCHD officials who said it wasn’t necessary since his event would last less than 12 hours. Not taking any chances, Rory contacted Utah County Attorney Kay Bryson who gave him the runaround, with no straight answers and recommending he contact another attorney. Calls to Bryson’s office were not returned.

While the tribute concert went off without a hitch, its success gave Fullmer and High Point Productions a false sense of security. Like Rory, they did not “anticipate” their mass gathering to run beyond dawn.

“The sheriff, who apparently has a crystal ball allowing him to see into the future, said the concert would last more than 12 hours,” Barnard said. “But when the storm troopers came to visit, it was only two or three hours into the program.”

Some might suggest Fullmer should have secured the permit as a precaution so his bases would be covered. However, the ordinance is rife with arduous and costly requirements. For example, for large assemblies, promoters must hire a licensed physician for every 1,000 people on hand. An emergency medical staff is not enough. Besides, “The law doesn’t work with ‘should have known,’” Barnard said, adding that an individual cannot be held accountable for not predicting potential illegalities.

Childs understands her family can’t use their property however they please. She knows that the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld zoning restrictions and reasonable licensing of events such as the Aug. 20 ill-fated concert. She’s also learned, however, that sometimes bureaucratic measures complicate her constitutional rights. Twenty years ago, her family owned 9,500 acres of land. That number has since dwindled to 2,200.

In 1990, the Childs waged a five-year battle to protect a parcel of their land the Bureau of Reclamation wanted for constructing a pipeline. Or was it to save an endangered flower? The government’s story kept changing. Eventually, the Bureau won and her family waved goodbye to another chunk of property. She worries that her family will lose control of additional landthat is, if Utah County has anything to do about it.

Meanwhile, her sons Rory and Yancy still plan on turning part of their property into a music venue similar to Red Butte Gardens. Their venture might fill an overlooked niche in Utah County, offering a place for residents to enjoy a wide range of concertsand, hopefully, never face the barrel of a gun.

Czech Republic Prime Minister Jiri Paroubek has defended local riot police who used water cannons and tear gas to break up an outdoor dance festival last weekend, claiming most revellers were 'no dancing children but dangerous people'.

The Social Democrat leader told local newspaper Lidove Noviny that the thousand strong unit of heavily armed paramilitary police had only being defending themselves against the techno fans who he described as' obsessed people with
anarchist proclivities and international links' who "provoke massive violent demonstrations, fuelled by alcohol and drugs, against the peaceful society"
(BBC).

Though a number of senior opposition politicians protested about the heavy-handed police tactics, the Czech PM's defiant position mirrored the stance taken by his predecessor Stanislav Gross, who instigated moves to outlaw free parties last year.

"The new approach to these parties is necessary because of our entry nto the European union", Gross' press person Vera Duskova told local news
server iDNES when a similar (though less violent) standoff occurred at the last Czech Teknival in 2004.

"Up until now the police tactics have always been to follow the path of least resistance but that policy has now finished," she added.

Following this year's raid, thousands of people gathered to protest against the police brutality outside the Interior Ministry in Prague this week and a number of sound systems (said to be run by Italians, according to Skrufff's Czech
person Jana) set up outside colleges in Prague. Former Czech president Vaclav Havel also became involved in the heated debate while local theatre group Ta Fantastika criticised Mr Paroubek and his government's 'Bolshevic manners'.

"They allowed them (the ravers - jana) to be beaten up, like the Chinese at the Tien-an-men Square," the thespians told local newspaper Blesk.

"This is an awful precedent that cannot be tolerated. Our theatre is going to buy a field for the next year's party," they promised.
